Herd Racing (NNS) Prepares for 2010

herd racing 01-29-10 — Lesage, WV — Veteran crew members Chad Beahr and Morris Van Vleet will head Herd Racing’s crew in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2010, the team has announced.

Beahr, of Mechanicsville, Va., will serve as crew chief for Herd’s #75 Nationwide Series team, while Van Vleet, of Mooresville, NC, will fill the role of car chief.

“We were fortunate to be able to get these guys in positions where their individuality can shine,” said team owner Dana Tomes. “Chad is a people person and Morris is great with setup and such, so we are looking for great results from them as a team.”

Both men have previously served as crew chiefs at various levels of racing. Beahr was Morgan Shepherd’s crew chief during the 2007 Nationwide Series campaign before running his own part-time Nationwide and ARCA effort in 2008 and 2009, while Van Vleet led Shepherd’s crew for most of 2008 and 2009 as crew chief.

“Both of these guys have virtually done it all from building the cars to final setup,” Tomes said. “I can tell already that our cars will be ready to go when we get to the track on race weekends. I think our driver and crew relationship will be one that will show great returns in 2010.”

Brett Rowe will again fill the driver’s seat for Herd’s Nationwide Series efforts. The team will kick off the 2010 season at Daytona and will determine the number of races it enters based on the team’s on-track performance.

“With the sponsorship situation the way it is in this economy our winnings will determine our future for the short term,” Tomes said.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WENDY VENTURINI

Skirts and Scuffs would like to take this time to wish the beautiful Wendy Venturini a very very Happy Birthday! We hope that you have a wonderful day and that your 2010 is the best year yet.

NSC Champ Wrecks at Rolex 24 Practice

NASCAR team owners might be kicking themselves right now with their decision to allow drivers to compete in other series besides NASCAR. I'm sure Rick Hendrick is questioning his decision at least on some level in the aftermath of Jimmie Johnson's crash during a practice session Thursday.

The crash was not the fault of Johnson but that of a GT car that gave Johnson no alternative when he pulled out in front of him. The No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings car was badly damaged in the accident. The team owners were speculating on the possibility of using a backup car. But it was determined by Riley Chasis Co., the initial builders of the car, that it was fixable.

But after looking over the car a bit closer, the car was deemed unrepairable. Unfortunately, the rules of this race state that once a car is entered and participates in any practice, etc., that said car or its number will not be substituted. The team must enter an entirely different car with a different number. So Team Stallings has chosen to use another car and Johnson's resources to get employees to Dallas, where they will load up and haul the new No. 98 car entry back to Daytona.

Stallings stated with confidence, "Although I'm not happy about this, the good news is we know that car. We won a championship in 2007 with that car."

The difficulties in this particular race, including high speeds, running at night and the slower GT cars driven by somewhat inexperienced drivers, can create a dangerous situation for the NASCAR competitors.

Past years have proven to be negative in its outcome for drivers like Carl Edwards and the 2009 Sprint Cup Most Popular Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Dale Jr. was involved in a fierce crash several years ago. Edwards actually wrecked his sports car in last year's event.

So for the time being, fans can enjoy seeing their favorite NASCAR drivers in races outside NASCAR, but will these accidents change the minds of the team and car owners in the future? Time will only tell.

Does anyone have anything for Johnson in 2010?

Jimmie Johnson made history in 2009 by claiming his fourth-consecutive Sprint Cup. If that's not enough, he's a favorite to win a fifth in 2010, and fellow competitors still seem to be scratching their heads and trying to figure out how to stop it.

According to Brad Keselowski, who is embarking on his first full season of Sprint Cup racing, the only way to stop the No. 48 is for them to do it themselves. Drawing on his experience of running part-time in a Hendrick Motorsports Sprint Cup entry in 2009 and seeing how the No. 48 team operates first-hand during that time, Keselowski said recently that the only people who can beat the No. 48 team is the No. 48 team.

"I think they are the only ones that can beat themselves," he said. "To beat the 48, they have to beat themselves. It will be interesting to see how that develops over time, you know, with Chad and Jimmie and how their relationship evolves, how they grow. Things change."

Fellow driver Elliott Sadler did mention during his press conference at the Sound & Speed event in Nashville earlier this month that maybe there are a few teams in the NASCAR garage that could possibly have something for the No. 48. Who? The other Hendrick Motorsports teams.

"I think the teams that can beat them right now are their teammates," Sadler said. "They finished in the top three in points. They definitely have their stuff together right now."

That's not to say that the rest of the field has given up. Meanwhile, as teams work feverishly trying to catch Johnson and No. 48 team, drivers acknowledge that it's cool to watch this historic period in NASCAR and to witness it up-close and personal.

"It's awesome to be able to be able to race with somebody like that, be on the same racetrack when history is being made," Kyle Busch said. "Unfortunately, one of us would like to beat him and actually have a chance to win a Sprint Cup Series title ourselves."

What happened to binding contracts in NASCAR?

I’ll be the first one to tell you that I know little to nothing about law. However, it seems to me from working for a place where our customers have to sign a contract, some people seem to get screwed over a lot by not researching the contracts and making sure they are educated on their rights.

Now when a driver signs a contract to drive a certain amount of races, he is expected to show up for practice, qualifying and of course the race. However, sponsors and teams seem to be exempt from any and all rules or binding contracts!

I can’t even name them all, but good and not-so-good drivers alike have been shafted a lot. For instance, 2008 defending Camping World Truck Series champ Johnny Benson had his team fold early last season due to lack of sponsorship, and Casey Mears has lost several sponsors and rides.

Tonight on Next Time By, we were discussing how Kelly Bires, driver of Junior Motorsports' 88 car in the Nationwide Series, may be out of a ride during some races in 2010 in favor of JRM’s new gem, Danica Patrick. Bires had been scheduled to run a full schedule, pending sponsorship, with the exception of Daytona as Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be driving the 88 in that race. However, if Miss Patrick decides to run races other than the 12 she’s set for, Bires could have to say goodbye to his ride.

Now, it may just be me, but couldn’t that be considered a breach of contract? Now, JRM has signed a contract with a driver and what the stipulations of that contract are, one can only guess, but I’m certain it's got to be binding on both ends. Just like the wireless company I work at, we’re required to release customers from their contracts in certain instances. Say, if the wireless company changes something in the contract, then they are in breach of contract. If a customer doesn’t agree with it, they are automatically allowed release from their contract. Many customers don’t even realize this and end up thinking they are stuck in a contract for 18 more months because of a new charge they don’t agree with. I get the feeling this is a sort of flip-flopped version of what goes on in NASCAR.

With the recent announcement of Miccosukee possibly pulling their sponsorship from Kyle Busch Motorsports, there is now a lot hanging in the balance. They’d also been scheduled to run a Cup schedule with Aric Almirola and a full-time Nationwide ride with James Buescher. So what will happen to these already underfunded teams should this sponsor pull out of NASCAR? Has Miccosukee already signed a contract to run these races? If so, what penalty do they have to pay to pull out of the contract early? If these teams have to pay, then what does the sponsor have to pay? Along the same lines, Casey Mears, who drove the 07 Jack Daniels Chevrolet with Richard Childress Racing, recently lost his ride due to a sponsor pulling out of NASCAR. However, Mears’ contract was only a one-year deal. Still, it doesn’t seem right.

On the same note, what do teams have to pay when they pull a driver out of a car he’d been scheduled to drive for no good reason other than to replace him with someone they think is better? I get the feeling they will not suffer nearly as much as the driver will suffer. Bires stands to lose a lot more than Patrick or JRM do and it's not right. JRM has three cars and can afford to run a few races without sponsorship. The initial impression had been given that the 88 would be running a full schedule, sponsored or not. That doesn’t seem to be the case. At any rate, JRM seems to practice a lot of favoritism.

Whether you agree here or not, one thing is sure: it leaves a lot hanging in the balance when a sponsor pulls out or a team backs out of a contract with a driver.

Cake Boss Does NASCAR

With the beginning of the NASCAR season approaching quickly, all sorts of television specials are airing. HBO is following Jimmie Johnson, SPEED TV is following Joe Gibbs racing and TLC is following … the Cake Boss?

Yep, you read that right! “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro Jr. and his Carlo's Bake Shop team from Hoboken, NJ built a life-size NASCAR race car at the Retail Bakers Association convention, which was held in Charlotte, NC in October 2009. Details are being kept under wraps as to what the cake's paint scheme looks like (although I'm sure a search of the Internet will reveal the results), but previews for the show have the cake falling apart during its construction.

The special episode of Cake Boss airs this Sunday, January 31st, at 9 PM on TLC. Check your local listings for special air times and reruns.

Danica Patrick set for 12 Nationwide Series races

2009 Daytona Dec ARCA Test Danica Patrick news conference Since we got the official word that Danica Patrick would be joining the NASCAR Nationwide Series for the 2010 season  we have been anxiously awaiting the release of her schedule. Today JR Motorsports made the announcement.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Jan. 28, 2010) – Danica Patrick will compete in 12 NASCAR Nationwide Series races with the possibility of 13 in her debut season with JR Motorsports, co-owner and general manager Kelley Earnhardt announced today.

The only event uncertain on Patrick’s schedule is the Feb. 13 season opener at Daytona International Speedway.  The No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet is entered in the event, but its driver will not be determined until after Patrick’s race in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) event on Feb. 6.  Patrick will compete in the Daytona ARCA race in a JR Motorsports-prepared No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet.

Beyond Daytona, Patrick’s 2010 campaign is confirmed starting with the Feb. 20 race at Auto Club Speedway and the Feb. 27 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Following Vegas, Patrick will take a four-month hiatus to focus on her IndyCar Series responsibilities before returning to drive the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevy in the Nationwide Series June 26 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The remainder of her schedule includes Nationwide races at Chicagoland Speedway (July 9), Michigan International Speedway (Aug. 14), Dover International Speedway (Sept. 25), Auto Club Speedway (Oct. 9), Charlotte Motor Speedway (Oct. 15), Gateway International Raceway (Oct. 23), Texas Motor Speedway (Nov. 6), Phoenix International Raceway (Nov. 13), and Homestead-Miami Speedway (Nov. 20).

“I’m thrilled to announce our 2010 Nationwide Series schedule,” said Patrick. “Like I’ve said before, we just want to be smart and calculative about this process.  The tracks we’ve selected not only compliment the IndyCar schedule, but will give me quality seat time at a variety of facilities.”

While Patrick’s participation in the Daytona race is to be determined, JR Motorsports will still field two cars for the Nationwide Series season opener.  Due to sponsorship reallocation for the upcoming season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will drive the No. 88 Hellmann’s Chevrolet in place of Kelly Bires in what is the first of two scheduled races for the JRM co-owner.  Bires will return to the seat of the No. 88 Chevy the following week at Auto Club Speedway and could be called upon to drive the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet at Daytona should Patrick not compete in that event.

“We want to give Danica the best opportunity to compete at Daytona, and that includes making sure she is 100 percent comfortable in that driver’s seat,” Kelley Earnhardt said.  “The Nationwide race there is perhaps the most competitive race of the year.  Once the ARCA race is complete, we will get with Danica and make a decision based on the best interests of her, the team, and our sponsor Go Daddy.  I’m extremely pleased with the working relationship between Danica and (crew chief) Tony Eury Jr.  They are communicating well and working extremely hard in preparing for this season.”

GoDaddy.com will serve as primary sponsor for 10 of Patrick’s 12 races in the No. 7 Chevrolet in 2010.

Setzer and Team Gill together for Daytona Truck Race

January 26, 2010 – Team Gill Racing continues its growth with the announcement that veteran driver Dennis Setzer will pilot the No. 46 PlaneGuts.com Dodge Ram in the upcoming Nextera Energy Resources 250 for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) at Daytona, February 12, 2010.

The event will mark the reuniting of one of the most successful driver/crew chief pairings in NCWTS history with Setzer and team owner Danny Gill. Together, Setzer and Gill scored six victories, 31 top-five and 54 top-five finishes in their three years of working together in the NCWTS.

Plane Guts is the pinnacle of aircraft interior refurbishing and complete make-overs. If completing your plane’s interior to perfection on a budget is what you are seeking than look no further. The company’s facility is based centrally in the United States in Tyler, Texas. With the capability of working on every major large jet down to the smallest personal aircraft, there is not a plane that they can’t turn into a show piece.

“I am very excited to have Dennis Setzer join Team Gill Racing,” said Gill. “Dennis and I had a tremendous amount of success in the NCWTS – ironically in the No. 46 truck. It will be familiar and comfortable for both of us so we will be able to be up-to-speed very quickly at Daytona.

“This is a one-race deal with PlaneGuts.com for the season opening race but we anticipate being able to make additional announcements in the near future.”

Team Gill Racing who recently announced a program that also included drivers Johnny Benson and Lance Fenton is based in Murfreesboro, TN and will field two trucks in the Nextera Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway on February 12th.

Carmichael and Monster team up for 2010 Truck Series and ARCA events

800MW-141 MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 27, 2010) – Continuing to show support to a remarkable athlete that over the years has done more to elevate the Monster Energy brand in the world of action and motorsports than any other, the Monster “M” claw will grace the green and black No. 4 Chevrolet Silverado of Ricky Carmichael in the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Joining forces with Turner Motorsports, LLC, Carmichael will compete in the entire 25 race NCWTS.

In the history of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), no other rider has won as many championships (15) and races (150) as Carmichael, earning him the nickname the Greatest of All-Time (the GOAT). He was also a record five-time AMA “Rider of the Year.”

The 30-year-old Clearwater, Florida native competed in 16 NCWTS races last season for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) scoring two top-10 finishes before moving over to Turner Motorsports for the final two Truck Series races of the year, where he drove the No. 31 Chevrolet. He also piloted a KHI entry in two ARCA Racing Series presented by REMAX and Menards races in 2009.

Carmichael will wheel the Monster Energy sponsored truck in all 25 NCWTS events. In addition he will steer a Monster Energy Chevrolet in nine ARCA races, beginning with the season opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

“Monster has been a sponsor of mine for five years,” said Carmichael. “So it’s really an honor for them to continue to expand their motorsports efforts with me. I learned so much as a driver working with Kevin (Harvick) last year. He encouraged me to make the jump to Turner Motorsports because of the number of races I was going to be able to compete in. I know seat time is the key for me becoming a successful driver. Last season was a great year for me, but I am really looking forward this season.”

“We’re quite pleased to be back in NASCAR and supporting Ricky in 2010,” said Nick Gagliardi, Monster Beverage COO. “Ricky has been instrumental in making Monster Energy the No. 1 energy drink in America, and as we help him to reach his goals in racing, he’s going to help us in the marketplace with an entirely new sales and marketing program we’ve structured around him.”

Mike Fritts, who served as Carmichael’s crew chief in his first stock car endeavor in 2007, will again assume the role as crew chief for the 2010 season. The No. 4 Monster Energy team is locked in for the first five races of the season based on last season’s championship points.

A Review of 24/7 Jimmie Johnson: Race to Daytona - Part 1

If you haven't seen the 24/7 Jimmie Johnson: Race to Daytona special, I highly suggest you see it. No really, now. Stop reading, head to hbo.com or turn on your TV. It is that good. Having aired only 24 hours ago, I've already watched it five times - and I'm not even a super huge Johnson fan!

So why is it so great? It gives you insight to how hard the drivers, pit crews and members of the teams work to get to where they are. This specific series takes a look at four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson as he prepares for the most prestigious race in NASCAR - the Daytona 500. Johnson won the race in 2006, under a cloud of scrutiny (more about that later), yet while he has four Cup trophies, he wants another Daytona win. The four-part series will follow Johnson during media obligations, include a look into his personal life and interviews with members of his family and team, including Crew Chief Chad Knaus and owner Rick Hendrick. Liev Schreiber narrates the series.

“The track. The clock. The wheel. Each is an evolution of the circle, each more ancient than the last. Together measuring one ageless pursuit of mankind: Speed. But velocity without a master will not win a race. A champion is asked to control speed from within, to bridge distance and time until all circles dissolve into one line, defining the finish. In under a decade, he has cemented a place in NASCAR history, his unprecedented four consecutive championships have built a dynasty. Jimmie Johnson stands alone as the best stock car driver in the world.” - 24/7 Jimmie Johnson: Race to Daytona

With this introduction, narrated over dramatic views of a car and a track, we begin a look into the world of the No. 48 Lowe's Chevy Impala and its driver, his family, team, crew, and owner. He is led by Crew Chief Chad Knaus, who is a perfectionist that Johnson trusts week in and week out. Johnson's wife, Chandra, is also there by his side at all times. Johnson says he loves being the guy with the target on his back, which has obviously been working for him considering those four Cup trophies he has!

We are introduced to Johnson during his morning routine of shaving, making a protein shake and driving around in his car. He talks about growing up being cleaned and polished ("corporate America's dream"), which is why he's known around NASCAR as “vanilla” and “boring.” He may be, but he can surely drive a car, earning himself 47 victories and more than $52 million in purse earnings. In 2009, he was honored by the Associated Press with the title of Athlete of the Year. However, this caused controversy since most people in the sports world (and non-sports world) don't consider NASCAR drivers athletes – and that angers Johnson. To show they are, our first glimpse into the seriousness of their athleticism is showing the strict drug-testing drivers go through. Thanks HBO for showing me Jimmie Johnson's pee in a cup. I could've lived without that!

We then switch to Chad Knaus, who says if he isn't working in racing, he doesn't know what he would do – it's all he knows. He leaves his house at 5:48 AM, something of an omen, as the 48 car is going for a 5th championship. He is heading to a test track (Rockingham) with Johnson to prepare for the season. Knaus explains the science behind finding speed and how when they finally do, it “jazzes” them up. But there are rules and regulations to follow, and in 2006 Knaus was suspended after the 48 car failed post-race inspection. The following week Johnson won the Daytona 500 while Knaus watched at home. That “cheating” stigma still sticks with Knaus today. Years ago - many years ago - everyone “cheated” to get the win. But then rules came along, and with rules come consequences. Knaus says if you have a black and white rulebook, you have to find the space in between. He stands by everything he's done and says nothing was illegal and that pretty much every crew chief has been caught “cheating.” But then again, they're not the 48 car.

Then we get a look in the 48 shop at Hendrick Motorsports in Concord, NC. The cars are built from scratch by a team of hundreds. There are 25 main men devoted to Johnson specifically, from his pit crew to car chief. The pit crew is made up of 7 guys, most former college athletes, who train twice a day. They have two trainers who put them through rigorous exercises and pit practices. Knaus admits to pushing his crew beyond the limits and most of the guys usually don't like him. But in the end, that gets the win. His number one pet peeve? Not shaving!

Hendrick Motorsports is a family, and every quarter, this family comes together for a big lunch, including its leader, Rick Hendrick. Hendrick is the proud owner of 9 Cup Championships and 4 Cup teams - the 48, 24 (Jeff Gordon), 5 (Mark Martin) and 88 (Dale Earnhardt, Jr). In his interview, he is sitting with cookies and milk. Johnson then tells the story of the “cookies and milk” meeting. In 2005, he and Knaus were at odds, and were called into a meeting by Hendrick. Hendrick handed them each a plate of cookies on a Mickey Mouse plate and a half-gallon of milk. They could either act like kids or sort things out. They did, and won the championship the following year and every year since.

The team of Johnson and Knaus are a great duo, on and off the track, although Johnson admits Knaus is not a people person (Knaus agrees) and has few friends – and is single. Johnson, on the other hand, has a family and a vibrant life. He met his wife Chandra in 2001 and married in 2004. Johnson's face glows as he talks about his wife, which is nice to see since we only get to see them together at the track. But now it's Chandra's turn to glow, as she is expecting their first child in July. We get an inside look to Chandra's pregnancy – her acupuncture to stop her morning sickness and what triggers it (meat cooking is one of the things).

But work still is going on at the shop, as the pit crew practices to fine tune the 12-second pit stop. The pit stop is changing the tires, filling the gas tank and making quick adjustments to the car. You know how you wait 2 hours at your local tire shop? Yah, this ain't nothing like that! While they practice the art of changing the tire, Johnson works out to a customized routine put together by a state-of-the-art personal trainer. His trainer, John Sitaras, notes that Jimmie doesn't train to race, he trains to win. Noted! One of Johnson's cars is taken to the “Wind Tunnel,” which duplicates the climates of tracks. This one will duplicate Daytona to see how the car reacts.

Knaus brings the team together to tell them all the trophies and banners from last year are gone – it's a brand new season and it's time to get started.

On part 2 (airing next Tuesday), watch as Jimmie prepares for the Rolex 24 and will be assisted by his dad and Chad is back at the shop, deep in perfecting the car for the Great American Race.

2008 Camping World Truck Series Champion Johnny Benson was missed by fans last season when sponsorship for his team dried up. But now, thanks to Team Gill Racing, Benson will have some limited seat time in 2010.

Team Gill Racing (TGR) will be competing in all 25 Camping World Truck Series events for the 2010 season. “We really needed to start this year out right,” said team owner, Danny Gill. “We wanted to show up and let everyone know that Team Gill Racing is bringing a lot to the table every weekend. We have a lot of really good things working in our favor right now. We feel like we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with all season and well into the following years.”

Hour of Horsepower and Skirts and Scuffs Partnership

I have to say I am really excited about the partnership and very grateful to Katy for not only allowing me to be a part of this site as a writer, but also to promote my internet radio show, Hour of Horsepower, on this site.

I hope to go far with this partnership and feature many of the ladies of S&S on the show as often as they’d like!

My ultimate goal for the show is to reach out to NASCAR fans of all ages and genders to provide a real fan’s point of view on the sport and not just a media perspective. In the coming weeks, we want to focus on establishing ourselves as a serious talk radio show for NASCAR fans and try to get a driver or two to call into the show and talk with us roundtable without the pressure of the media.

As was mentioned before, any of you ladies are more than welcome to call into the show any time you’d like! We don’t have a concrete time for the shows but for now, it will be aired on Wednesday evenings sometime between 6-10 pm EST.

We’ll be holding late night fan chats on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings around 1 am as often as we can to discuss non traditional topics as well! This week’s topic will be Food Sponsors in NASCAR!

Katy and I will be working out the posting of the podcast on this site, but you can always listen to the archive here. The official site is HourofHorsepower.com and our official Twitter is @HorsepowerRadio. I can be reached via email at genna@hourofhorsepower.com!

Special thanks to Rebecca Kivak, Summer Dreyer (who’s partnered her own podcast, Next Time By, with HoH as well), and of course Katy Lindamood for appearing on the show and for their support!

Hope you will all join us for Episode 4 of Hour of Horsepower!

How will the new rule changes affect NASCAR?

The off season has had no shortage of NASCAR news. In addition to the new baby announcements and changes to the schedule, NASCAR announced on Thursday that they will be making some significant rule changes.

NASCAR officials have announced that they plan to relax and let the drivers do what they do best without too much interference. However, it was stated on Next Time By internet radio today that in the past, NASCAR has made the same claim and it hasn’t happened. So will it really change this time?

Now, of course, with this announcement, all the fans are excited and hope for some good racing but we all wonder in the back of our minds: Will NASCAR really relax their grip on the races or will this be another empty promise?

Of course, we did see near the end of last season where this had already started to take place. The fiery feud between Cup series superstar, Denny Hamlin, and Talladega champion, Brad Keselowski sparked a great amount of excitement. NASCAR took it upon themselves to back off and let the drivers have their feud, which has been ongoing throughout the off season.

Some fans seem to have a bit of an issue with this due to safety reasons, but NASCAR CEO and chairman, Brian France states “NASCAR is a contact sport – our history is based on banging fenders.”

And it is so true. NASCAR is a true contact sport in the sense that the drivers thrive on on (and off track) rivalries to keep things interesting. Even with the inevitable safety issues that come up, fans and drivers always love a good rivalry.

“Over the past 10 years we’ve dramatically increased safety and that mission continues. However, it’s time for us to allow the drivers to drive. We don’t want the rules and regulations to get in the way of great racing and fantastic finishes,” said France.

One thing NASCAR fans can always count on is rule changes. And there have been plenty of them for 2010 already. Bump-drafting rules are null and void now at Daytona and Talladega Superspeedway. They will also implement a bigger restrictor plate at Daytona.

If you remember, right before the Talladega fall race, NASCAR announced the “no bump drafting into the corners” rule. That rule did not go over well with drivers or fans. The draft, especially the bump draft, is what makes Talladega more exciting to watch. During that particular race, the field was so widely spread out that it be came pretty dull for a good part of the race. Whether or not that is the fault of the lack of bump drafting in the corners is anyone’s guess.

The bigger restrictor plate for Daytona seems to be causing a great deal of excitement and debate in the NASCAR community. Some argue that the racing will be better due to the higher speeds and additional horsepower in the cars and others say that it will be far more dangerous. Whatever the case may be, its sure to make the races fare more interesting to see.

Perhaps the most significant change to NASCAR is the removal of the wing from the COT. Officials have decided to replace it with the spoiler from the old car. I’m not too well versed on aerodynamics, but if I understand correctly, the spoiler will give the car more downforce and hold it closer to the track.

Whatever happens in the next few months, be assured that NASCAR has only what they believe is best for the sport, drivers, and the fans in mind. The new rule changes are sure to make for a really interesting season.

Juan Pablo Montoya and wife expecting their third child

The NASCAR baby boom has netted another driver. Juan Pablo Montoya announced on Twitter on Thursday that he and his wife, Connie, are expecting their third child:

@jpmontoya: By the way the wife is pregnant with our 3rd child!!! Very happy about it!!!!

The baby is due in July. Montoya and Connie were married in October 2002. They have two children, Sebastian, 4, and Paulina, 3. If you follow Montoya on Twitter, Connie tweets on her husband's account on race days with updates of his progress.

Montoya is the latest Sprint Cup driver to be preparing for a new addition to the family. Four-time champion Jimmie Johnson and his wife, Chandra, are awaiting the birth of their first child also in July. Carl Edwards and his wife, Kate, will welcome a daughter in February, while Elliot Sadler and his wife, Amanda, are expecting a son in March.

Two NASCAR personalities rang in the new year with a visit from the stork. ESPN pit reporter Shannon Spake and her husband, Jerry McSorley, delivered twin sons, Brady and Liam, on Jan. 1. K&N Pro Series East (formerly Camping World Series East) driver Steve Park and his wife, Jessica, welcomed a son, Jayden Robert, on Jan. 2.

Skirts and Scuffs would like to send our congratulations to Juan Pablo and Connie on the upcoming birth of their child!

K&N To Be Title Sponsor For Top Developmental Series

Daytona Beach, Fla – The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) announced today that K&N Engineering, Inc., will be the title sponsor for NASCAR’s top developmental series, formerly known as the NASCAR Camping World Series East and West, beginning in 2010.
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series will continue to crown champions through separate schedules on the East and West Coast. The seven-year agreement illustrates NASCAR’s commitment to the grassroots foundation of the sport.
“K&N is a company that epitomizes the spirit of NASCAR,” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France. “The developmental series are a tremendously integral part of the past, present and future of NASCAR – from the great champions throughout the years to the pipeline of tremendous racers that have made their way up the NASCAR ladder to our national series. Having a company with the dedication to the sport and the automotive industry that K&N does speaks volumes to the importance we place in the series.”
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series encompasses NASCAR’s oldest stock car series in the West, which dates back to 1954, and the East that has evolved from the former Busch North Series. It runs on a challenging combination of speedways, short tracks and road courses, and the series has made its mark throughout the years with tough competition and exciting racing.
The Riverside, Calif.-based K&N Engineering is the inventor and leading innovator of reusable cotton gauze filter technology for automotive applications. K&N, which has grown from a family-run business to a global company, traces its involvement with NASCAR back to the days of supplying parts for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at the old Riverside Speedway.
“We are thrilled to be the Official Developmental Series Partner and sponsor of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series,” said Steve Rogers, chief executive officer of K&N Engineering. “Our roots in NASCAR go back to the 1970s and this feels like a partnership long overdue. After supporting grassroots and professional racing for decades, we love the idea of supporting a developmental series that provides great racing excitement while developing the top tier drivers of tomorrow.”
K&N will make its on-track debut as the series entitlement sponsor at the 2010 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown – NASCAR’s prestigious postseason event which has earned the moniker of the “Daytona 500 of short-track racing.”
The event will be Jan. 29-30 at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.) and will air live on SPEED and SIRIUS NASCAR Radio.
The all-star event brings together the variety of talent that is the hallmark of the series – the top up-and-coming drivers in NASCAR and the experienced veterans who make the series their home.

NASCAR wants its drivers to get back to the basics and do more fender banging

After years of working hard to control the drivers on and off the track, NASCAR may have realized that most fans don't want to turn out or tune in to watch polite drivers drive around a track.  The cry from fans to bring back the passion and conflict that made NASCAR fun to watch has been heard.  Read More at Examiner.com

Official NASCAR online racing series to launch next month

iRacing.com home to 5 virtual NASCAR series

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Jan. 21, 2010)
– A vision that Bill France Jr. articulated more than 15 years ago will become reality this season with the formation of the NASCAR iRacing.com Series, an official NASCAR racing series.

The online racing competition commences Feb. 9 with the first event of the inaugural 18-race, 39-week NASCAR iRacing Drivers World Championship. This series will feature the 50 top-rated drivers currently racing in iRacing’s Pro Series and will include NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., who recently clinched entry into this elite series.

Selected races from the series will be carried over the internet on iRacing.com. Weekly iRacing news coverage and standings will be featured on NASCARmedia.com (media only).

NASCAR and iRacing have worked together since the announcement of the partnership in 2009 to refine the structure of the series, establish a “sporting code” or rule book, as well as develop an identity for the series.

While entry for the NASCAR iRacing Drivers World Championship is limited to the top 50 drivers, iRacing will also host five NASCAR amateur series open to all NASCAR fans through membership in the iRacing.com online service.

Just below the World Championship series, the 2010 NASCAR iRacing Pro Series is reserved for the 250 top-ranked oval-track iRacing drivers and commences in May to determine eligibility to participate in the 2011 NASCAR iRacing Drivers World Championship.

“Bill France Jr. was ahead of his time when he initially had the vision of an online racing series. Thanks to evolving technology NASCAR fans can virtually compete at their favorite track and have their chance to end up in a victory lane,” said NASCAR Senior Vice President Paul Brooks.

Tony Gardner, iRacing’s president, explained that iRacing’s staff has been busy fine-tuning the infrastructure and creating the organization that supports the vision of NASCAR online racing.

“We’ve created our online racing service for racers and fans,” Gardner said. “We’ve done the hard work to make it simple and easy for NASCAR fans to join iRacing and get behind the wheel. You don’t have to be a computer geek to do this. PC owners with a broadband connection, only need to purchase an inexpensive wheel-and-pedal set from their local consumer electronics store or online. In an hour, they can be racing. It’s that simple. Everything an aspiring racer needs to know to get started is on our Web site, at www.iracing.com.”

The opportunity for NASCAR fans to have extremely affordable but highly meaningful racing careers of their own will become a reality with the launch of these NASCAR-sanctioned amateur online racing series organized and hosted by iRacing.com.

Featuring four 12-week seasons each calendar year, these series feature modifieds, late models, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series trucks, NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars and mirror the skill ladder that NASCAR athletes typically follow, beginning with short-track racing and proceeding through virtual versions of the three premier real-world NASCAR series.

While iRacing competition licenses to participate in organized races are issued in progressive skill levels, all members are permitted to practice with any car on any track. In conjunction with the Daytona 500, the spring NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Talladega race and the NASCAR season-ending Championship Weekend at Homestead- Miami Speedway, as part of its 2010 World Tour, iRacing will organize races that are open to any member of the service, regardless of license level.

NASCAR's rule changes will allow drivers to have at it

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 21, 2010) – NASCAR announced Thursday that it will relax some on-track rules, putting racing back in drivers’ hands in 2010.

The changes, which begin with next month’s season-opening events at Daytona International Speedway, will allow drivers to be even more competitive.

Race rule changes were one of several announcements during Thursday’s annual media-tour presentation at NASCAR’s Research & Development Center in Concord, N.C.

NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said the loosening of on-track reins is another step in enhancing competition and back-to-basics racing.

“Over the past 10 years we’ve dramatically increased safety and that mission continues. However, it’s time for us to allow the drivers to drive. We don’t want the rules and regulations to get in the way of great racing and fantastic finishes,” said France.

“NASCAR is a contact sport – our history is based on banging fenders.”

Among the changes: Bump-drafting rules will be eliminated at Daytona and Talladega Superspeedway. Teams also will use a bigger restrictor plate at Daytona.

Eliminating bump-drafting rules puts responsibility for on-track moves squarely back in drivers’ hands. Larger restrictor plates give drivers more horsepower.

NASCAR also announced a significant change to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ new car, including replacing the wing currently mounted on the rear of the car with a spoiler. A full-field test is scheduled for March 23-24 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Following that, a decision on when to implement the spoiler will be made based on teams’ input. The switch from wing to spoiler will return to a more traditional stock-car look.

“Over the last couple of years, there have been dozens of changes to this car, with this being the most visible change,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition.

Also significant: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby has been promoted to Managing Director of Competition, with oversight of all three national series’ directors, officials, inspection processes and race officiating. He will continue in his series director’s role until his successor is found.

“Probably no one is more qualified for this new job than John,” Pemberton said. “He knows and understands the officiating and inspection processes better than anyone and is the perfect fit.”

Other changes announced Thursday:

• Mike Fisher, managing director of NASCAR’s Research & Development Center, has some additions to his team. They include Brett Bodine as the director of racing R&D, Tom Gideon as director of safety, R&D, and Jamie DiPietro as manager of safety inspections R&D.

• Beginning with the Feb. 13 season opener at Daytona, NASCAR Nationwide Series teams will be limited to 15 crew members, including the driver, crew chief, spotter and seven over-the-wall pit-crew members. Teams also won’t be required to provide a scorer. Last year teams had no limit on at-track crew members.

• NASCAR Nationwide Series teams may run no more than two races in 2010 without using an engine sealed by series officials. Last year they could run three races before using a sealed engine.

• NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams will use double-file restarts “shootout style” in 2010, making restart rules uniform across all three national series. Teams also will return to traditional pit stops, eliminating last year’s procedure of refueling and changing tires on separate stops. Teams also may use a new, vented fuel dump can, eliminating the need for a catch can.
