Talking Points: NASCAR Nationwide Series – Sam’s Town 300 (LVMS)

After and exciting finish in last week’s Stater Bros. 300 the NASCAR Nationwide Series returns to action this Saturday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for its third  race of the 2010 season.

Dancia Mania to Cease after Sam’s Town 300….until June

Media darling Danica Patrick will complete in her third Nationwide Series race this weekend at Las Vegas before heading back to IndyCar for the start of their season. Patrick who finished 35th at Daytona and 31st at Auto Club Speedway will return to NASCAR on June 26th for the Nationwide Series race at New Hampshire.


Reigning Series Champ Hopes to Improve on 2009 Finish at Vegas

2009 was an awesome year for Kyle Busch in the Nationwide Series, but the Las Vegas native recorded his worst finish of the season at his home track.  Busch has one victory in 2010 NNS competition coming last weekend at Auto Club Speedway.

Another hometown boy, Brendan Gaughan is hoping to end up in victory lane at LVMS. In one Nationwide Series start at the Vegas track Gaughan earned a 7th place finish.  Gaughan earned a victory on him home track in 2003 in the Camping World Truck Series.


New Crew Chief and Baby for Carl Edwards

Just one week after being replaced by Todd Parrott as crew chief for Matt Kenseth’s Sprint Cup Series team Drew Blickensderfer is back on top the pit box. Blickenserfer has been called in to replace Mike Kelly as Nationwide Series crew chief for Carl Edwards. Mike Kelly will be heading up Roush Fenway Racing’s Nationwide Series effort as their new director of competition.

Carl Edwards and his wife Kate welcomed their first child this week. Will new fatherhood give Carl the boost he needs?


Milestone Starts for Steve and Mike Wallace

Steve Wallace will be making his 125th Nationwide Series start this weekend in Las Vegas while his uncle, Mike is poised to make his 350th start in the series.

Elliott and Amanda Sadler Welcome Son

NASCAR driver Elliott Sadler and his wife Amanda welcomed their first child, a son, into the world this week. Elliott made the announcement Monday, February 15, 2010 via his Twitter by saying:

I want to announce the birth of our son Wyatt into the world this morning!! Amanda and baby are doing great!

The Sadler's named their son Wyatt Herman (after Elliott's father) Fritts (after Amanda's grandmother) Sadler.

Gatorade Duel 1 Starting Lineup

Getting into the Daytona 500 doesn’t happen with one round of qualifying. Though the front row has already been set based on the times from Saturday’s qualifying, everyone else is still vying for their starting spots.  (Mark Martin will be on the pole for the 52nd running of the Daytona 500 and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start in 2nd.)

To determine where drivers will start (other than the top 2) two duel races are held on Thursday Feb 11, 2010. Here’s the starting lineup for the first Duel race.

2010 Budweiser Shootout Results

Racing is back underway! On Saturday night 24 drivers lined up for the 2010 Budweiser Shootout. It was an exciting event that gave fans a small taste of what to expect from next Sunday’s (Feb 14th) running of the 52nd Daytona 500.

Congratulations to Kevin Harvick who won his second straight Shootout and put Richard Childress Racing back in Victory Lane.

Skirts and Scuffs Partners with the Hour of Horsepower Podcast for 2010 Season

Skirts and Scuffs is excited to announce a new partnership with the podcast Hour of Horsepower. Hosted by our very own Genisis (Genna) Short and Aaron Rosser, Hour of Hourspower is a weekly podcast that lets race fans share their thoughts on the current state of affairs in the sport, voice their opinions on races and rivalries, and air their rants and raves on past and upcoming events.

It is our hope that this partnership will allow both Skirts and Scuffs and the Hour of Horsepower podcast to grow and reach a new audience. New Hour of Horsepower podcasts will be featured in the sidebar of Skirts and Scuffs and our contributors will be frequent guests of the show. 

Our entire team would like to thank Genna and Aaron for this opportunity and we look forward to a long relationship and wish them the best with their podcast. 

Just for the record, Aaron is male and while we are a female site we are granting him an exception to the rule (as a partner)...that is if he agrees to provide photographic proof that he has indeed worn a skirt. Gibbs Racing to take over zMAX Dragway on May 23

News from the Charlotte Media Tour:

  

J.D. Gibbs' youngest son Taylor, 5, will finish treatments for leukemia in April, and Gibbs said the family wanted a way to thank the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Levine's Children's Hospital in Charlotte.

            

To that end, Joe Gibbs Racing announced the Taylor's Finish Line Festival will be held May 23 - the day after the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race - at zMAX Dragway.

Taylor was diagnosed with leukemia three years ago.

"Taylor's treatment, Lord willing, ends this spring," Gibbs said.

"We want to celebrate, to say thank you to Make-A-Wish and to Levine's Children's Hospital."

            

The festival will include activities for children and adults, with more than 40 carnival rides and games, inflatables, hot air balloons, BMX and skateboard exhibitions, appearances by NASCAR drivers and a live concert by Grammy Award-winning artist TobyMac.

            

Tickets will be available through the Charlotte Motor Speedway ticket office, as well as the event Web site. All the money from ticket sales will be donated to Make-A-Wish and Levine's Children's Hospital.

Verification Tire Test At Daytona International Speedway For NASCAR Nationwide Series New Car In May

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2010) – NASCAR today announced the addition of a verification tire test for the NASCAR Nationwide Series new car on May 18-19 at Daytona International Speedway, in addition to some key rule changes for the 2010 season.

The test will verify the type of tire Goodyear will provide for the NASCAR Nationwide Series new car for its first race, set for July 2 at Daytona. That will be the first of four events for the new car this season. Others include Aug. 14 at Michigan International Speedway, Sept. 10 at Richmond International Raceway and Oct. 23 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The new car is targeted for full integration into the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2011.

“Since this is an open test, there will be plenty of opportunities for the teams to get the information necessary to dial their cars in for the upcoming new car events,” said Joe Balash, director of the NASCAR Nationwide Series. “This also will be a final verification of our shock, spring and engine packages for the new car.”

The new car previously has tested at Talladega Superspeedway, Richmond and Charlotte. A rain date, if necessary, will be May 20.

The tire lease program will remain the same in 2010 for the NASCAR Nationwide Series with these new options available to teams:
• Tires will continue to be transferred between events with the same D-codes as recommended by Goodyear.
• The transfer of tires between the different national series at combination events with the same D-codes will be permitted.
• At track, Goodyear will provide surplus tires. Goodyear will notify teams weeks in advance of availability.

Additionally, NASCAR announced that beginning with the 2010 season-opening race at Daytona on Feb. 13, the NASCAR Nationwide Series will institute crew member limits similar to the program the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series utilized last season.

Teams will be limited to 15 crew members for each event, including the driver, crew chief, spotter and seven over-the-wall team members each race weekend throughout the season. Teams also will not be required to provide a scorer.

“The crew limits are a direct result of the continuing dialogue we have with our series owners to reduce at-track costs,” Balash said. “The program was successful in the truck series and we anticipate that same result.”

Another change involves the sealed-engine rule. This year, a team will run no more than two consecutive races without using an engine previously sealed by NASCAR officials. This excludes events at Daytona and Talladega. Last year, teams were to run no more than three consecutive races without using a sealed engine.

NASCAR Nation Mourns the Loss of Pit Crew Member DJ Richardson

Today the NASCAR Nation is mourning the loss of Richard Childress Racing's DJ Richardson who died  from complications of the H1N1 Virus on Christmas night. Richardson was the rear tire changer for the #29 driven by Kevin Harvick in the Sprint Cup Series. Richardson was 37 years old.

Sharon Hutchens, wife of SHR Director of Competition, loses fight with cancer

Skirts and Scuffs would like to send our condolences to Bobby Hutchens, Director of Competition for Stewart - Haas Racing and his entire family, following the passing of his wife Sharon. Sharon Hutchens lost her fight with breast cancer on Tuesday December 22, 2009. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hutchens family this holiday season.

Remember this site is still a work in progress. Interested in joining our team of writers? We'd love to have you. Of course, you have to meet one requirement first. You've got to be a lady. No, we aren't being sexist or trying to descriminate against men. We just want to be a completely unique NASCAR site. Sorry guys, you'll have to start your own group.

Now that that's out of the way let's talk about how you can become part of the team. All you need to do is send an email to Katy (she's our admin) saying you are interested in joining the team. She will get back to you shortly with more information and get you set up. That's right ladies, anyone is welcome here regardless of their writing background.

Still not convinced? Here's a few cool things about our site

• Our site is completely and 100% written by women. We still allow men to read and encourage them to do so but we keep the writing between us girls. 
• While we can't pay you for your work at this time we do allow you to retain the rights to your submissions. That means you can remove them from the site if you like at any time (just let us know why) and that you can republish them or duplicate publish them elsewhere if you choose to do so.
• We encourage you to share your photos with our readers. If you've got photos from a race or an appearance feel free to share them. 
• We allow our writers to write about whatever they like as long as they stay on topic. If you've got an idea for a column or article go ahead and write about it. Want to do a race recap of your favorite driver that's fine too. 
• You can write as much or as little as you like. We don't hold you to deadlines however we do ask that if you are covering an event you post the story within a timely manner. 
• We encourage self promotion. All of our writers are featured on the Our Writers tab at the top of the page. In addition writers can include a brief bio with their contact information at the bottom of their post with links to their twitter, email, facebook, etc...
• We encourage writers on this site to promote each other. If you see an article you like please share it with your friends via social networking or bookmarking sites. We will do the same with your article.
