During Championship Week in 2009, the Johnsons announced their plans to donate just under $1 million for the 2009 Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Champion’s Grants.
Whether he’s on or off the track, Jimmie Johnson proves time and again that he is a true winner. He and his now pregnant wife, Chandra, felt it was important to give back to the communities in which they had grown up. As the co-founder of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, Chandra stated in a recent interview with Track Record, “It was amazing to review the proposals and read first hand about the pressing needs of our schools. The funding requests were so diverse, I am particularly excited about the projects in Oklahoma as this is our first opportunity to give back in my hometown.”
Many schools in California, North Carolina and Oklahoma received grants totaling $922,000. Oklahoma, where Chandra is from, received grants totaling more than $700,000. These grants were designated for science and technology needs, classrooms, gyms and playgrounds. Part of the funds were used for school programs such as accelerated reading.
The 34-year-old NASCAR champion said, “This is what the foundation is all about—being able to give back to communities in need. We are grateful for the partnership with Lowe’s and their guidance as our foundation begins its work in education. I look forward to visiting some of the schools next year to see the completed projects.”
